One of the last things I got to do with my grandfather was vote alongside him in the 2004 election.

After we voted, he and I sat out on our porch. He reminded me South Carolina didn't always consider him a whole man, and that he couldn't always vote like we just had done.

Then, he looked at me, grabbed my arm, and said: "Never let anybody tell you that you don't matter. Never let anybody tell you that you don't count."

That is why I am so disgusted by what is going on in states like Georgia, Florida, and now Texas. Over 380 anti-voter bills have been introduced in our country this year telling people that they do not matter. And that is a lie.

My wife and I named our eldest son after my grandfather. And when I went to cast my ballot for myself running for the U.S. Senate, I took him with me. I think about that every day.
