Team, deciding to run for this U.S. Senate seat wasn't easy. I didn't really want to go to Washington DC — I had always planned on serving North Carolina from here at home. That's why I was so humbled when North Carolinians elected me to be governor.

But this race is too consequential. The stakes are too high. I couldn't sit by.

When we started this campaign, I did so with a great sense of responsibility for all of you who are putting your trust in me — and even more hope. Together, we will win.

I'm running because our nation cannot afford two more years of unchecked Republican power in Washington. The attacks on health care, on democratic values and even on American citizens — they have to stop.

Instead, our leaders should be focusing on strengthening our communities by investing in public schools, securing health care access and prioritizing hardworking folks over the wealthiest few. That's what our administration did in North Carolina — creating jobs by expanding the clean energy economy, giving public school teachers a much-needed raise, expanding Medicaid and more.

This is the work I'm ready to do as the next Democratic Senator from North Carolina, when we flip this seat from red to blue and take back the Senate for the people. But there's a lot of hard work ahead of us first.
